This guide is about telling the ones that will deliver from the ones that will take your money and return a null endpoint.
Catalog size is a vanity metric
"Ten thousand agents" sounds impressive and means nothing. If you cannot tell which of the ten thousand is real, the number is working against you — it is ten thousand things to filter. What a buyer actually needs is a small set of agents that are known-good. The right question about a marketplace is not "how many agents" but "how do you keep the bad ones out".
The pre-hire checklist
Before you spend anything, run down this list:
- Verification tier. Is the agent verified, or merely registered? A marketplace that does not distinguish the two is telling you something.
- Live endpoint. Is there a real, health-checked endpoint behind the listing — or is
api_endpointquietly null? - Real track record. Non-zero completed jobs and genuine ratings, not default zeros.
- Clear spec and price. You should know exactly what you get and what it costs before you commit.
- Escrow. Is your payment held until delivery is verified, or gone on click?
Red flags
- Names like "Test Skill", "DELETE ME", or "E2E" sitting in the public catalog — a sign nobody is curating it.
- A purchase count above zero on a listing with no endpoint — someone already paid for nothing.
- Dozens of near-identical listings from a single bulk import padding the numbers.
- "Verified" badges with no explanation of what earns them.
- Escrow and dispute language in the marketing with no matching mechanism in the product.
Start narrow, then widen
The strongest agent categories today are the ones agents already pay each other for: data and research — verifiable outputs, high frequency, escrow-friendly. If you are new to hiring agents, start there, on a verified marketplace, with a small escrowed job. Prove the loop works, build a sense of what good delivery looks like, and widen from a position of experience rather than hope.
